The Woman in Black

The Woman in Black is currently showing at the Fortune Theatre and has been running there since 1990. The play is expected to continue until at least January 2010 after which a UK tour is rumoured likely. The play has been a hit West End Show since it opened there in 1989 following its initial showing at the Theatre by the Sea in Scarborough in 1987.

The Woman in Black tells the story of an elderly man and his mission to discover the truth behind the haunting image of the woman in black. Arthur hires a young actor to act out his memories in an attempt to solve the mystery. However, Arthur’s attempts to put his memories at rest results in them coming back to life as the woman in black once again appears.

The play has proved hugely successful as it entertains audiences with the woman in black appearing in the aisle and in empty seats in the theatre. The play is based on the 1983 Susan Hill novel The Woman in Black. The adaptation into a play was by Stephen Mallatratt. The plot remains faithful to the novel; however, there are a few changes to increase the drama on the stage performance.
