Les Miserables

The classic French musical Les Miserables opened in 1982 in Paris’ Palais des Sports and was received exceptionally well. The musical was derived from the Victor Hugo novel written in 1862 and is a story with several different characters and plots running through it. All the characters from the story are intertwined as we learn of their personal and joint struggles and triumphs.

Les Miserables was translated into English in 1985; most of the material is the same as the original French version however, some changes did occur. After its translation it took to the stage of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Barbican Theatre where it was welcomed by the same reviews it had experienced in Paris.  The musical became a classic on the West End and became the longest running musical as the nicknamed Les Mis continued to produce sell out shows. By 1987 the buss of Les Mis had spread to America as it opened on Broadway and received a Tony Award for Best Musical.

Les Mis is currently showing at The Queen’s Theatre where dates have been extended to February 2010 in an attempt to meet the demand for tickets. This proves that the best selling show is still enchanting audiences over twenty years on!
